Tricks and Tips for the Best Baby Skin Care

Making sure your child’s skin stays clean and healthy takes more than simply bathing and applying lotion once a day. It involves making sure that all of your baby’s skin stays healthy and clean. This means taking special care of baby’s laundry and sun exposure and properly treating any skin conditions that develop. Baby skin is not nearly as tough as a grown-up’s skin. Your baby needs you to help him make sure that skin conditions don’t take hold anywhere on his body. Baby skin care is not very complex–which should be good news for you! In fact, you can cobble together a great regimen in no time. Here are some hints and tricks to assist you.

Obviously you want to make sure that every part of your baby’s skin that is not covered with clothing gets sunscreen applied to it–including his face and ears. Before going outdoors give your baby some added protection by dabbing some zinc oxide onto his (or her) ears and face. Remember: whenever you take your baby outside into a sunny day, he or she needs to wear a hat! You can’t be too cautious!

Always test a baby’s bath water before you let the baby sit in it. A baby’s skin is sensitive and burns more easily than an adult’s skin. Babies don’t like very warm water; in fact, it isn’t until much later in life that people start to enjoy hot water when they bathe. Your elbow is the best tool to use for testing bathwater. If the sensitive skin of your elbow finds the water too hot or too cold, adjust the temperature of the water. A baby’s bathwater should be lukewarm at most.

Lukewarm is a good compromise in temperature because it will keep you from accidentally burning (or freezing) your baby.

You don’t need to use very much soap at all to keep your baby’s skin clean. You only need a few drops of soap to clean your baby thoroughly. If you use too much you run the risk of drying out his skin and leaving him vulnerable to irritation. Never directly apply soap to your baby’s skin. Instead squeeze the soap onto a washcloth and then lather up your baby’s body and rinse it off quickly. It will be easier for you, especially while you are still learning, to only wash one part of your baby’s body at a time. Handling a soapy baby can be very scary!

There are all sorts of ways to practice proper baby skin care. It is important to remember that proper skin care involves more than just a regular bath. Proper baby skin care involves things like finding the right laundry soap, using the best sunscreen and letting the baby spend some time naked every day. Caring for and protecting your baby’s skin should be second nature before too long. Before too long it will feel like second nature to you!
