Teaching Children Eco-Friendly Habits Early

Thursday, September 4, 2008 14:22

Childhood is considered a period of learning.  Most of our kids ideas and attitudes are influenced what they see and learn in their environment, and most importantly, from us, their parents.  That being said, learning eco-friendly habits is no different.  Here are 5 tips for getting your child on the path to “greendom” now.

1)  Lead by Example- Children are impressionable.  They follow the example of elders to learn lifelong lessons that they will take with them forever.

2)  Keep Children involved in the outdoors- The more children play outdoors, they more respect they will build for their outdoor environment.

3) Do Earth Friendly Activities together- Plant a garden, clean up the beach or park- starting these kinds of activities as a family while they are young makes clean up time fun for them.

4) Have “Green” House Rules- Turn of the lights before leaving a room, turn off the water while brushing your teeth- if these habits are established at early childhood, there is a good chance they will be carried through to adulthood as well.

5)  Talk about it- Children have that innate characteristic of caring about everything when they are young- they care about their family, they care about their toys- pretty much everything!  If they made aware of how valuable a resource the earth is, they will care about that too.
