Getting a Portable Air Conditioner
Saturday, July 24, 2010 0:27Living in a hot place means dealing with sweat, sticky skin, humid air and uncomfortable living conditions. If it’s your first time living in a place where the air is humid all the time, you may be wondering how to cope with the heat.
You don’t have to bear with the humid air (at least when you’re at home), particularly because you have a boatload of options as far as your home cooling system is concerned. One option involves permanent cooling equipment in every room, such as ceiling fans and traditional air conditioning units. But all smart home owners know that portable air conditioners are the best option.
Air cooling is possible with portable air conditioners, unlike with ordinary ceiling fans. Ceiling fans are a must for any home in a hot place, but they don’t really cool the air much, do they? They simply move hot air around so that the illusion of cooling is there but you don’t really feel relief from heat or humidity. Standing underneath a ceiling fan will make you feel like bathing in warm air..
Traditional air conditioners are an option, except that you have to make them permanent fixtures in a room. We have to admit, there are more conventional air con models than portable ones. But you have to think of the expense of installing a unit on every room in your house. You also have to punch a hole on the wall of every room in your home to accommodate the unit. A central AC system is great, but it’s too expensive. The installation and the units may be inexpensive (particularly when you buy second hand), but the electricity bills will be through the roof.
You can bring your portable unit to one room when you intend to stay there for a long while (like your television room or your home library). Some models also function as fans or dehumidifiers. Some portable air conditioners have a built-in dehumidifier feature. Getting rid of exhaust is a breeze because of the way portable ACs are designed.
Most portable air conditioners are lightweight and cost effective. But before you get one, you should remember to prioritize the features you really want. Look at cooling capacity and energy efficiency. Make sure it’s a model that you can use in a particular room. Also, consider other features like air speed, exhaust system, built-in dehumidifier and the presence or absence of a digital thermostat.
