Creating an Eco-Friendly Nursery
Monday, September 8, 2008 14:51For the environmentally conscious parent, setting up an eco-friendly nursery for the new baby does not simply mean ordering organic sheets. If you are truly looking to create a safe, toxin-free environment for your little one, consideration should start with the walls and floor.
The walls- It’s a good idea to paint the nursery walls with paint that doesn’t release VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). To do so, look at the labels when you are buying. Any eco-friendly paints will have the ingredients listed right on the package. Most contain all-natural things like beeswax, plant oils, soy resins and buttermilk.
The Floor- Opt for hardwood flooring as opposed to carpets. Carpets have a habit of collecting allergens such as dust, that can make your baby sick. If you do want to add rugs to the room, choose area rugs made from untreated fibers such as wool or organic carpet.
The Bedding- First, we’ll start with the mattress. Select a mattress filled with organic cotton or wool casings. For sheets, again, opt for all natural organic cotton. Traditional cotton is treated with pesticides and can harm your baby’s skin.
The Crib and other Furniture- Only buy furniture made from solid wood, not particle board or plywood. Any non-solid wood has been treated with chemicals and retains those fumes for years on end.
