Change of Address: Packing

Sunday, December 27, 2009 14:11

We have already written about the invisible cost of moving in our last article, so today we will talk more about some tips how to pack your belongings before the moving. Packing all the stuff before moving is something many people are afraid of. If you want to pack successfully and peacefully, enough time, boxes and different wrapping material will be necessary, as well as a convenient system in place. Without a sufficient plan, the move is likely to become an even worse nightmare than it already is. Time Even if you think you can manage all in one day as you are moving only from a one bedroom place, try to get some more time – in most cases it is useful. In an ideal situation you’d want to be finished one day before the day of moving so that you have enough time to pick up all the forgotten things people always find in the last minute, groceries from the fridge and all the things you are using on a daily basis.

Boxes and packing material

No matter how many suitcases and bags you own, usually these are not enough to hold everything. The most necessary packing material you will need are boxes, bubble wrap and newspaper (for securing kitchen ware). Moreover, some permanent markers, packing tapes, polyfoam wraps, polystyrene beads, plastic bags and other accessories will come in handy.

How to acquire some boxes? Well, either just acquire them (the price usually varies from $1.50 to $5 a piece), or try asking at shops around your neighbourhood – if you manage to get enough empty boxes for free, your moving budget will be much smaller. Or ask your moving company, most of them offer the chance to purchase or hire the boxes directly from them in a sufficient amount. And in order to estimate the sufficient amount of boxes you will need, try to answer the following questions: How big is your old home? How many rooms? How many family members? How much stuff have they all accumulated over all the years? and so on. But the norm is that for a usual 5-bedroom house you will need as much as 100 boxes. If that looks like too many for you, just estimate how many boxes will be used to pack all your stuff only from the kitchen and living room! It is also important to have boxes of all possible sizes and formats, no matter which way you will acquire them. If you are renting the boxes from a professional moving company, it is usually possible to get someone from the workers to come and look around your home so that they can estimate the number of boxes needed.
